Social Works
About the Department
The Department of Social Work was established in 2022 with the primary focus of imparting quality education and fostering excellence in social work practice. Considering the growth of NGOs and NPOs in the region and the lack of Social Work colleges, there was a pressing need for ICFAI's own Social Work Department. The department began with a handful of students and few faculty members. Since its inception over two years ago, the department has grown significantly in both student and faculty numbers, and the second batch of Master of Social Work (MSW) students is currently progressing successfully.
The department currently offers a generic MSW course with various elective papers. Over time, it plans to introduce specialized courses that will equip students with 'specialized skills' and professionalism to work in government and non-profit sectors. The Tura Campus is situated at Danakgre, in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. The campus is sprawled in the beautiful hills that give a panoramic view of the Tura peak. The Shillong campus is at Phawa Ville, Dhankheti, Shillong.
MSW Course
Social Work is an age-old practice in the fields of charity, social welfare, community development, and social empowerment of vulnerable populations in the country. The Master of Social Work is a professional course with duration of two academic years. It is a full-time course, and the curriculum is divided into four semesters. Each semester includes fieldwork, where each student is attached to a supervisor. Additionally, individual and group conferences are held.
The two-year MSW program under CBCS includes 20 core courses of 80 credits, 3 discipline-specific elective courses of 12 credits, 2 generic elective courses of 8 credits, 2 ability enhancement courses of 4 credits, and 2 skill enhancement courses of 4 credits, totalling 108 credits over 4 semesters. Additionally, there will be a Dissertation of 6 credits, which students must complete within two months after the end of semester II. The total credits earned by the end of the program will be 114.
At the Social Work Department, ICFAI Meghalaya, we are committed to excellence in the academic and professional preparation of our students. Our faculty members are dedicated and accomplished teachers. The Social Work Department prepares students to work in various fields of social work practice, training them to develop different skills to become innovative and effective social workers
